Last week I was in Florida on a business trip when I received a phone call that my home had flooded from a faulty washing machine. My wife had started a load of laundry and then went to run a few errands, coming home after approximately three hours. It appears that the bottom tub of our Maytag washing machine either cracked or the water fill valve didn’t function correctly. By my calculations between 350 and 400 gallons of water poured into our home before my wife could shut the water off.

I arrived home 5 hours later to find a restoration company extracting as much water as possible from our carpet, but our engineered hardwood floors are completely shot, buckling at the joints already. The crew left 10 dryers and 2 dehumidifiers to run for the next three days. Just the cost of water extraction and use of the dryers and dehumidifiers will easily top $2,000 based on the cost sheet left by the restoration company. I’m glad I have very good homeowners insurance, though my deductible is, ironically … $2,000. Thank

10 Things Game Shows Won’t Tell You

1. Could you be less boring?

Prior to his audition for “Million Dollar Money Drop,” Joel Sturdivant thought he and his friend had a pretty compelling story – high school sweethearts, now best friends. Then he heard one of the other would-be contestants was a lion tamer, another pair had spent the last year as missionaries in a developing country. “I knew we were screwed,” he says.

To a game show’s producers, fitting a type or having a unique background is as important as playing the game well, says computer programmer Warren Usui, who has been a contestant on “Jeopardy!,” “Merv Griffin’s Crosswords” and “20Q.” They want interesting people who will keep viewers watching. For those who aren’t missionaries or circus folk, Usui suggests weaving interesting tidbits into the answers to the shows’ producers’ personal questions. “I once lost a boa constrictor in my car,” Usui recalls telling producers, who later asked him to share the details on-air with Alex Trebek during what ended up as a four-game stint on Jeopardy. Congratulations to the latest winner of our Pitch of the Week competition, Roger Poll. His innovative company AKA Promotional Products provide a wide range of recycled and environmentally friendly products manufactured in the UK. We recently spoke to Roger to find out more:

“We started trading in the promotional gift market in June 2005 with the aim of promoting recycled & environmentally friendly products to a new market. At this time, recycled products were few and far between. Nowadays more suppliers than ever are opting to produce recycled products. Our main supplier is based within the UK and produces our products using UK waste, so it is win-win situation.

Our range of products is extremely wide, it is amazing what can be done with recycled waste! We stock a wide range of business products such as keyrings, badges, pens – even umbrellas!

In the long term, we want consumers to realise that buying recycled products is not only good for the environment but it is also a cost effective option too.”

Never Trust the Judicial Process

It is impossible to trust the judicial process after reading this (via Radley Balko) and realizing that this kind of thing must go on all the time.  In fact, our heroes on TV shows engage in behaviors not much more honorable than this.  You can’t watch a TV crime drama for five minutes without seeing police and prosecutors pressuring witnesses.  I was Castle the other day with my 12-year-old daughter (her favorite show, and being a Nathan Fillion fan I am happy to watch it with her) and as usual they were interviewing some suspect and she started doing what has become her habit in these situations — she started screaming “lawyer — get a lawyer” at the suspect.  Good for her.
