Are you looking for a career change and considering a job in the health business? Wondering how you can afford to go back to school without breaking the bank? Relax. There are many options to finance a health career that are easy to obtain.
Grants and Scholarships
Once you pick a school, fill out financial aid forms to see what types of grants you’re eligible for. Government grants are given to lower-income students, but there are many other grants and awards out there. The school may offer awards based on volunteer work, academic success, or other any criteria. Scholarships aren’t just for the sports savvy either. Many scholarships are available to students based on work history, field of study, church affiliation or other circumstances. Scholarship applications are usually simple and may need an essay for completion.
Government Help
In addition to grants, the United States government will help pay for your health education in other ways. Years of military service add up to years of paid education in the field of your choice. You can also tailor your military career to gain experience in your chosen field. There are parts of the country where health care isn’t readily available and if you’re willing to work in these areas for a few years, the government will pay a part or all of your tuition. This is a great option if you love rural areas, but if you don’t, it’s only a few years anyway.
Student loans are available in many forms and for many amounts. Your parents can receive a PLUS loan for your tuition or you can take out your own loans. The government subsidizes the interest while you’re learning and you will have at least 10 years to pay off your debt once you graduate. Student loan providers are flexible and will work with you once you graduate to make your payments feasible.
Future Employers
Many hospitals offer student loan payment as part of their benefit package. Years of service will translate into percentages paid toward your principle in addition to the salary you’ll draw. Some hospitals also have nursing schools they run or sponsor. Students may be able to contract free education in agreement to work for that hospital for so many years. It’s like getting a cash advance on your future.
Health care positions are always going to need filled, especially with baby boomers aging by the millions. You’ve already taken the first step by researching financing options, so now take another and go for it!
