Feed-in tariffs aim to help both individuals and the environment alike, with money offered to those who generate their own eco-friendly electricity.
Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Ed Miliband said: “The UK is leading the way in tackling climate change.
“Organisations and householders can play a central role in leading the move to a low carbon economy whilst saving money on their energy bills.”
People will be paid for every unit of electricity they generate and an additional 3p/kWh for any units which are then sent back to the national system.
Those who use their own electricity will benefit from lowered bills as they no longer have to buy supplies back from the grid.
British Gas recently announced it was to roll out smart meter technology to its customers so they can monitor their energy usage.
